MORRISTOWN & MORRIS TOWNSHIP  Morris County is New Jersey's seventh largest county in the center of Northern New Jersey. It has also become one of the fastest growing & wealthiest counties nationwide. Morristown is the county seat for Morris County and is located just 26 miles northwest of Newark and 39 miles northwest of New York City. In the 1700s, permanent settlers established Morristown and began to mine the magnetic iron core. George Washington was attracted to this area because the surrounding mountains offered protection to this area & his troops. Today the county is known as the "Military Capital of the American Revolution." Here General George Washington's Continental Army encamped during two winters of the Revolutionary War. The Jacob Ford House in Morristown was used as his Revolutionary Headquarters that terrible winter of 1779-1780, while his troops camped at nearby Jockey Hollow. Other famous American Industrial Revolutionary figures also made their mark on Morris County. Alfred Vail bought interest in the Samuel Morse telegraph at the Vail Homestead Farm on Speedwell Avenue. The Morris Canal, conceived by George Macculloch, was considered to be one of the most accomplished engineering feats of the time. Thomas Nast, a nationally recognized political cartoonist who lived in Morristown, created the Santa Claus character we all know today. By the 1880's, New York City millionaires discovered Morristown and the Gilded Age began Morris Township has been referred to as the doughnut & Morristown is the center, since Morris Township surrounds Morristown. Both towns are intertwined by their rich history & schools, but maintain separate municipal and public services. It is an easy walk or quick drive to the many museums, Community Theater, Morristown Green, several Restaurants and cultural organizations. Over the years, Morris County has emerged as a leading business center with more than 50 Fortune 500 firms that have headquarters, offices or a major facility in this county. Morristown & Township offers many county's parks, community pools, tennis courts, Jockey Hollow, Mennen Arena (with 3 Ice Rinks), County Library, and Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and more.   Morristown history is part of the rich heritage of our country. The town and the region are known for their important role in the American Revolution. General Washington headquartered at the beautiful Ford Mansion, now a National Historic Park and Museum. Revolutionary soldiers spent the long winter of 1779 &1780 camped at nearby Jockey Hollow. Morristown has undergone extensive renewal and expansion in recent years. In the downtown area, Headquarters Plaza offers a health club, shopping mall and office buildings. MOTTO: A Community rich in history, with a constant striving for a better tomorrow.  Morris Township was founded in 1740 and has an area of 15.3 square miles. The population of the Township is approximately 21,791. Morris Township is a residential community and one of the most affluent areas in Morris County. It is an area with long roots in the past. During the winters of 1777 and 1779-80, George Washington’s Continental Army camped in the deep snows of Jockey Hollow, now part of the National Parks system. Today, the Township offers its residents a pleasing mix of home sites which range from new sub-divisions to spacious older homes on tree lined streets to picturesque dwellings built in colonial times. In addition, there are attractive condominium complexes. Also many condominium/town homes complexes. The Township is in an excellent location with easy access to major highways, such as State Routes 10 and 24: U.S. Routes 46 and 202; and Interstates 78, 80,280, and 287. The area has three train stations – Morris Plains, Morristown and Convent Station.
